I first wrote Qur’an Memorizer in 2010, when I was teaching myself how to write apps for the iPhone. By then the market for Qur’an apps was already saturated, but I couldn’t find an app that felt like a real book and was delightful to use. So I started to learn how to make that app myself.

There was a period of four years, between 2013 and 2017, when I didn’t do too much new development for the app. It continued to work with every new release of iOS without requiring any changes. But in 2017 when Apple announced that they would stop suppporting 32-bit apps, I knew that I had to release a new version.

A lot had changed in the iOS devlopers toolkit in that time, not the least of which was the release of a new programming language—Swift. So I decided to rewrite Qur’an Memorizer, in Swift. I think it was the right decision, because I was able to implement a lot of the new features that users expect from their apps today (e.g. multitasking on the iPad), but still use the proven code that was core to the app, like the page-turning code.

I’m hesitant to add too many features to the app and risk making the app confusing to use. I would prefer it if the app did a few things, and did it well. Having said that, I do plan on a few more releases over the next few months. I’ll post more about them as I have more to say.
